SiO₂ · Quartz System · Trigonal
Atoms arrange themselves into perfect geometric order. Not designed. Not instructed. It is the mathematics of minimum energy. The crystal is nature choosing the most elegant solution, automatically, every time.
The cubic system — diamond, halite, fluorite — has the highest symmetry of any crystal class. All three axes equal length, all angles 90°. Diamond's hardness comes not from the carbon atom itself, but from the geometry of how the lattice connects them.
Quartz. Calcite. Tourmaline. The trigonal system has a three-fold rotational axis — rotate 120° and the crystal looks identical. Quartz's piezoelectric property — generating voltage under pressure — comes directly from this asymmetry. Every crystal oscillator in every device you own relies on this.
