Apis Mellifera — Colony Architecture
Sixty thousand individuals. No manager. No org chart. No meetings. And yet the hive makes decisions that outperform any committee. The colony is the mind. The bee is the neuron.
The bee arrives at the hexagon not by instruction but by physics. When cylinders of wax are packed together and subjected to heat, they anneal into hexagons. The bees do not design this. The material does.
The hexagon is the only regular polygon that tiles a plane using minimum material per unit area. Bees discovered this 34 million years before Pappus of Alexandria proved it mathematically in 300 AD.
A forager returns with information. She dances a figure-eight on the comb. The angle encodes direction relative to the sun. The duration encodes distance. The hive knows where to go without a word.

When a hive swarms, ten thousand scouts fan out searching for new homes. Each returns and dances. The dance of the best site is more vigorous. Other scouts visit. Gradually, consensus emerges — not by vote, but by dance.
One-third of a colony's foragers work at any given time. The rest are idle. This is not laziness — it is resilience. The idle third is the surge capacity. The colony's insurance policy against the unexpected.
